Optical Fiber Processing

We offer tools for a large variety of different types of fiber processing:

This includes the stripping of fiber claddings, the cleaning and cleaving of fibers, and splicing or polishing, depending on the application. Microscopes and/or interferometers are used in the analysis of fiber end surfaces.

We have tools available for all stages of processing, both for field applications and applications in the laboratory. We cover the entire range of fiber diameters to 1.2 mm.

3 Axis Splicers

S153 - the handheld fusion splicer for single fibers

Core-aligned and cladding-aligned optical fiber splicing is carried out using three-axis splicers.

To actively adjust optical fibers during splicing, the splicer’s fiber holder must be able to be positioned in three axes that can be shifted in three dimensions. Using flexible V-groove holders, the fibers can be shifted toward each other and any misalignments corrected.

For extremely high demands on splicing quality, the cores of single-mode fibers are aligned to each other during splicing, thereby achieving a splicing attenuation at the physical feasibility limit of 0.01 dB (see FITEL S178).

Alignments carried out with regard to the outer diameter of the fibers are referred to as cladding aligned. They offer an inexpensive alternative for short-range distances (see FITEL S154-AC).

FITEL’s splicers feature an integrated self-adjustment system: Via special software, the splicer makes adjustments to correspond optimally to the fiber type or fiber manufacturer, making even the first splice a successful one.

Both devices allow SM and MM connectors to be spliced directly (including E2000/HRL).

If you want the fiber to be aligned at the outer jacket, the FITEL S154-AC is the splicer of your choice. Even under difficult environmental conditions, it completes every splice in a maximum of 6 seconds and with a loss of 0.03 dB. That is why it is perfectly suited for use on construction sites – for example, during the rollout of FTTx and metro networks.

Anyone can operate and maintain this device. Just take out the V-groove and you can clean the lenses without any problems.

The FITEL S178LDF is particularly relevant for laser manufacturers and service teams that work with fiber diameters greater than 125 µm.

The positive characteristics of a robust field unit are now available for this application field. This device can be operated with a battery or using a power supply. It is easy to operate, lightweight, and comes in a robust suitcase.

The FITEL S179 is a core-centered three-axis splicer for bending-insensitive fibers used in Metro, LAN, FTTx. The splicing of a fiber in semi-automatic operation takes only six seconds, and the application of a heat-shrink splice protector is finished within nine seconds. The rechargeable battery operates for up to 200 splices!

For better handling, this device is equipped with a 4.3" large touchscreen. A large opening grants easy access to the splicing chamber and its interior is illuminated by four bright LEDs providing good visibility even under poor lighting conditions.

The housing is shockproof, waterproof, and dustproof. This ensures that the device can operate reliably even under harsh environmental conditions.

The removable V groove for easy cleaning is revolutionary!

Compared to its predecessor (the S178), this S179 splicer is lighter and flatter. Its powerful 8N drive motor allows for reproducible splices.

The FITEL S179 has an NFC interface for un-/locking and can be controlled via a smartphone. Two integrated USB interfaces allow further communication possibilities.

FITEL S179 is ideal for use in LAN, MAN, WAN, FTTX, data centers, and the Deutsche Telekom network (compatible with the TS 0290/96 from DTAG).

All FITEL splicers can be operated via PC. SmartFuse software, which has many different features, is required for this purpose. It can be used, for example, to export splicing images and splicing data. New programs can also be downloaded onto the splicer and existing programs modified using this software.
