To easily test fiber ribbon connectors, hybrid cables, and distribution cabinets, so-called visual fault locators (VFLs) or continuity testers are used.

OP280 – The VFL from Optotest
Up to twelve cables can be tested with the VFL OP280 from OptoTest: For this purpose, a strongly-visible bright red laser beam is coupled into all fibers. This allows damage to be detected at a distance of up to a few hundred meters.
 
This unit can be used for single-mode and multi-mode applications and is preprogrammed for different measurement modes. This makes both fully-automated measurements and the individual scanning of each single fiber possible.
It is powered by an integrated battery that can either be charged via the USB interface or a separate 5 VDC input.

The OP480MT model automates the measurement of MTP/MPO connectors in order to detect broken and reversed fibers in these multiple fiber connectors. Thus, it is easy to detect problems that arise. In connection with the OP280MT visual fault locator (red light source), this device quickly shows the configurations and channels, including the types A, B, C, and universal, of many different ribbon fibers. This device can also be set up with a user-friendly configuration via software.

Because the measurement method of the OP480MT is a non-contact method, the connector exhibits significantly less wear and tear during production. This device aids quickly and efficiently in the production and quality control of MTP ribbon connections.

The OP480MT and OP280MT are available separately or in combination as a set (OP polarity kit 12). The set contains both devices, launch cables for male and female connectors, connector pieces, cleaning tools, software, and rechargeable batteries.
