Fiber Optic Field Equipment

In optical measurement technology, different measurement devices are used to test optical fibers. In addition to analyzers and power measurement devices, optical sources that can be readout with the help of monitors are also used.

Test Platform for Wide-Area Networks

MTS-6000A

Base units for testing wide-area networks - also referred to as WAN.

All test platforms for WAN networks possess basic functions. One may supplement them with applicable measuring modules for comprehensive measurement devices. Select suitable modules on an individual basis.

The MTS6000A is particularly compact and thus well suited for complete fiber characterization during installation and maintenance of optical fiber networks.

The MTS8000 has the largest functional range and can be used in the measurement of high-speed networks at 40 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s. It is applicable for physical, optical, and transmission/Ethernet measurements.

The ideal base unit for a technician in the field! The MTS-6000A is suited for the installation and maintenance of networks – from small networks to WAN networks – and is very easy to operate. It has a wide selection of modules available: More than 40 different optical modules facilitate different applications. This includes measuring modules for OTDR, PMD, CD, and WDM. Measurements can be performed up to 50% more quickly using automatic bidirectional analysis for OTDR, attenuation, and ORL measurements.

The many possibilities include testing the connection using a visual fault locator (VFL), level measurements, and the integration of an attenuation measuring station as well as plugging in a microscope.

To communicate via the optical fiber, the manufacturer offers the base unit with a built-in optical talk set option.

Connections

Several interfaces are available for fast data transmission: USB, Ethernet, and optionally, a 1 GB storage extension.

Applications

With the help of corresponding modules, the MTS6000A is suited for the following applications

  • Fault localization
  • OTDR, back reflection, and level measurements
  • Spectral analysis for CWDM/DWDM
  • Polarization mode dispersion (PMD), determination of the spectral attenuation profile and measurement of the chromatic dispersion (CD)
  • Attenuation measurement and optical return loss (ORL) measurement
  • FiberCompleteTM modules for automatic OTDR, attenuation, and ORL measurement

The MTS-8000 offers: 70% shorter test times, more than 40 applications, and connection via 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, or Ethernet. This unit is suited for installation, maintenance, and fault location in every optical network and features additional options: e.g., fiber inspection, ROADM, and 40G/100G testing.

This modular base unit is equipped with a PowerPC processor and a 100 GB SATA hard drive and is operated using an anti-glare touchscreen. This platform offers the most extensive features of the MTS series and can be equipped with almost any of the corresponding measuring modules.

Integrated Measurement Options

The following measurement options can be integrated directly into the  MTS-8000 base unit on an optional basis: power measurement, talk set, and connection testing with a visual fault locator (VFL). By connecting a P5000i video microscope, automatic testing of the connector is integrated with a pass/fail analysis according to the IEC norm.

Connections

In addition to the 1 G Ethernet connection and four USB interfaces, the MTS-8000 also has wireless connection via 3G, WiFi, or Bluetooth.

These units are compatible with the MTS-6000 series.

Applications

  • Complete characterization of the fiber to be measured with the corresponding modules: OTDR, attenuation, ORL, CD, PMD, and AP
  • Testing of optical connectors
  • Optical spectrum analysis for testing and error diagnosis of WDM systems and ROADM networks
  • Testing and error diagnosis of merging Ethernet/IP networks with 10 Mbps to 100 Gbps interfaces incl. data capture and analysis
  • Testing of layer 1-3 Ethernet/IP SLAs with the help of an automated extended RFC2544/SAMComplete via ITU-T Y.1564.
  • Testing of TDMPDH to SONET/SDH at OC-3/STM-1 to OC-192/STM-64 – also includes service disruption measurements and path overhead (POH) capture with triggers
  • Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) measurement in live traffic and in-band OSNR in DWDM/ROADM systems with in-service PMD
  • Allows installation and maintenance of OTN networks up to 11.1 Gbps and OTU4 with full 100 Gbps client
  • Supports 1/2/4/8/10 Gpbs fiber channels for installation and maintenance of SANs and low-latency circuits
