FLEXPOINT® Lasers for Microscopic Applications

Photonics News No 33

Markings in Focus Even at High Levels of Magnification!

UK33-0740

Laser markings often appear out of focus and too large when working with magnifying optics.  We can help! New types of laser modules were developed specifically for applications in which a microscope is used as the optical source of magnification. These laser modules display a “clean” spot even at multiple levels of magnification.

The Module
Inside the module high quality optical elements are used and adjusted manually to obtain the optimal alignment position, allowing, for example, a beam diametre of 20µm to be achieved at 100mm (1/e2) away. Despite the complexity of the optics, the external dimensions are small measuring 95mm in length by Ø12mm. Both the wavelength and the output power can be adjusted.

The modules are available at operating voltages of 4.5-6VDC or 8-30VDC.  Due to the 50mW low electrical power consumption, whilst delivering 0.5mW optical output power, the FLEXPOINT® can generally be connected to existing electric circuits. As are typical of the FLEXPOINT® range, floating ground housings and reverse voltage protection are included.

Optional Models
If objects of varying brightness have to be positioned, the option of an “integrated potentiometre” to retroactively dim the laser has proven valuable.
