Fibers with high power SMA are fiber assemblies with SMA connectors and free-standing fibers. As the fiber inside this connector is "free standing” it is possible to couple in lasers with a higher power. The power level depends on the coupling conditions.
Fiber Connectors for High Power Levels
Standard SMA connectors using adhesives to couple in a high power level would mean the certain destruction thereof. In the past, one solution to this problem was to let the fiber stick out of the ferrule; however, this design was prone to break and did not comply with the SMA standard.
SEDI developed the "High Power SMA” as an alternative to the standard SMA. In the optical end facets of the High Power SMA, the fiber does not stick out of the ferrule. The fiber is held in the center of the connector by a sapphire holder, the advantage being the absence of an adhesive. Furthermore, metal parts allow heat to dissipate quickly.
