Singlemode VCSELs for Pointing and Position Sensing

Large production quantities allow for the replacement of an LED by a single-mode laser.

Singlemode VCSEL

Single-mode VCSELs are the best choice for systems that require a high spatial resolution and low power consumption even at fluctuating temperatures. In addition, the design and production of large quantities of these VCSELs lead to inexpensive components.

SM VCSELs feature a stable, Gaussian-shaped far field. In contrast, MM VCSELs have a "donut-shaped" far field and a higher noise level.

VCSELs used for pointing or in position determination emit at the wavelengths 670 nm and 850 nm.

Operating Temperature Range up to +85°C

ULM Photonics developed SM VCSEL laser diodes at 850 nm that have an operating temperature range between -40°C and +85°C. At +85°C the life span of these VCSELs is 10 years!

 

With this development we were able to meet the requests made by customers from the sensor industry.

The operating temperature and reliability values exceed the data of the 670 nm VCSELs by far.

 

Now that SM VCSEL laser diodes have successfully replaced LEDs in applications such as the computer mouse, the same is expected in other applications. For example, the 850 nm VCSELs can be used without an ESD protective diode in data transmission up to the Gbit range.

  • Polarization stable models available

 

In addition to the versions available in a TO housing, there are also an SMD version and chips available.
