Single-Mode Fibers

With very small core diameters, single-mode fibers transmit just one single mode of coupled light. This enables them to transmit signals across long distances with virtually no loss. At telecom wavelengths of 1310 nm and 1550 nm, they can travel more than a hundred kilometers unamplified. Other versions are used, among other things, for light transmission with very high beam quality.
