Lasers with special properties are required for telecommunications applications. Both fiber-coupled laser diodes and bidirectional emitters are used for data transmission with optical fibers.
LEDs and VCSELs are used for data transmission in optical fibers. They are less expensive than laser diodes. Equipped with a fiber connection, they can be easily integrated into a system.
Telecommunications emitters are used in optical data transmission and are, therefore, equipped with optical connectors. Customer-specific requirements can be easily integrated.
So-called transceivers combine an optical sender and receiver in a single housing. Low-noise InGaAs PIN photodiodes are integrated as the receiver, whereas LEDs are integrated as the sender.
