Fiber Optic Monitoring of Passive Infrastructures - The Entire Network at a Glance

D83-106

With the so-called KRITIS Act of June 2017, legislators have created new guidelines for the security of data networks. According to this Act, all operators of so-called critical infrastructures are obliged to ensure and document the smooth operation of their infrastructures.

Pursuant to article 2, section 10 of the BSI Act, all companies from the energy, information technology and telecommunications, transportation and traffic, health, water, nutrition, and finance and insurance sectors belong to “KRITIS.” It also affects all facilities or installations that “are of major importance for the functioning of the community because their failure or impairment would result in significant supply bottlenecks or threats to public safety” (e.g., state bodies). It is irrelevant whether the network runs through the entire republic or only connects two neighboring buildings with each other. The KRITIS Ordinance of the Federal Ministry of the Interior dated May 2016 regulates exactly which companies and infrastructures are affected.

Using optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technology, our monitoring systems detect damage and unauthorized access in real time, enabling the operator to respond in the shortest time possible. Fiber optic infrastructure sensors can also be integrated to protect shafts, pipes, operating and monitoring rooms. These indicate, for example, whether manhole covers or access doors have been opened. Even changes in the water level can be monitored in this way.

Depending on the requirements and the size of the network structures to be monitored – from WAN to LAN – we offer customized monitoring solutions. All of them can be controlled and read out via web interfaces. Since the optical components only require a low operating voltage, they function independently of the power grid.

We take care of installation.
Upon request, we can also install the corresponding hardware and software components. Our service personnel has been trained by the manufacturer and is at work all over Germany.
