Optical Fiber Processing

We offer tools for a large variety of different types of fiber processing:

This includes the stripping of fiber claddings, the cleaning and cleaving of fibers, and splicing or polishing, depending on the application. Microscopes and/or interferometers are used in the analysis of fiber end surfaces.

We have tools available for all stages of processing, both for field applications and applications in the laboratory. We cover the entire range of fiber diameters to 1.2 mm.

Automatic Fiber Stripper

Automatic fiber stripping units for window stripping and end stripping - no cleaning or stripping chemicals required.

Fiber Stripper

This automatic fiber stripper is made for challenging tasks - like window stripping fibers with acrylate coating diameters up to 1,000 µm. The AutoStripII can be used as a stand-alone unit or integrated into sub-systems. 

Thanks to the Burst TechnologyTM, it is not neccessary to chemical clean the fibers before stripping them - instead the new technology vaporizes the fiber coating. You will get a cleaned, stripped fiber. Furthermore at higher strength than any mechanical stripping method.

The system got a build-in microprocessor: this insures high-quality as it controls critical processes and parameters like the stripping distance, burst temperature, or burst speed and also makes strength tests. For that the automatic fiber stripping unit ASII insures high quality, repeatability and high production yield.

The Fiber Prep Unit II - FPUII - makes it possible to strip polyimide coatings in the middle and at the end of the fiber.

This automatic stripper, which is suited for use in the laboratory, is equipped with the “ring of fire” technology. This technology utilizes three electrodes to produce plasma, which ensures both consistent temperature and a constant ion field during processing of the optical fiber.

The fibers, which have a polyimide coating, are stripped at low temperature quickly, cleanly, and without mechanical stress. The best part is that this unit can be operated reliably by anybody without the need for special training.

The Plasma Work Station (PWS) by 3SAE is unique. Many tasks can be performed with the help of this system:

  • Removal of Polyimide
    Ring-of-Fire® technology allows the safe and reliable removal of polyimide coatings via ion etching. The etching process is more advantageous than thermal stripping methods because the tensile strength of the processed fiber is significantly higher.
  • Removal of Metal Coatings
    Metallic coatings, such as e.g. gold, can also be removed using the PWS.
  • Melting a Spherical Lens onto the Fiber End
    Spherical fiber end surfaces can be melted onto the fiber using the plasma work station at a standard deviation that is better than 3 µm.
  • Fusing Capillaries to Fibers
    Using the appropriately configured PWS, thin fibers can be fused to capillaries or with customer-specific optics.

The Lightel coating stripper GPST-1000 can be used with to remove almost all coating materials from fibers with diameters of up to 1200 µm (Large Diameter Fibers – LDF) without any residue. It works with coating made of polyimides (PI), acrylate, or silicone just as well as with two-layer coatings. Stripping is carried out completely contact free via a plasma, preventing chemical and mechanical damage and not impairing fiber strength.

The GPST-1000 can be operated in stand-alone mode without technical gases or compressed air. Software allows parameters for up to twelve stripping programs to be defined and stored, which are then executed fully automatically. This makes the GPST-1000 a highly versatile and robust coating stripper.
