Fiber Optic Lab Equipment

Different measurement devices are used to test optical fibers. In addition to analyzers and power measurement devices, optical sources that can be readout with the help of monitors are also used.

Made for fiber optic connector inspection: The DSCOPE.
DAISI v2: Digital Automated Interferometer for Surface Inspection from Data-Pixel
Interferometer Arden

Interferometer

Fully automated interferometers for laboratory use for the evaluation of connectors – versions for thick fibers and fiber ribbons available.

Microscopes and Interferometers

Different interferometers are available for connector evaluation:

  • 3D Scope
Inexpensive interferometer for the evaluation of ferrules and bare fibers
  • DAISI
Digital interferometer for the surface inspection of single fibers, standard connectors, and MT-RJ connectors, PC + APC
  • DAISI-MT
Digital automatic interferometer for simultaneous surface inspection of multi-fiber connectors, MPO/MTP, and thick fibers.
    Combined white-light interferometer and red-light phase-shift interferometer.
  • Koncentrik V2
Modular measurement system for concentricity measurements of optical ferrules and optical fibers
  • VFI Cleave Meter – Measuring the Cleave Angle
Interferometric Inspection System for Measuring the Cleave Angle of Fiber End Faces
  • ProView
Interferometers for the fast and precise measurement and inspection of fiber end surfaces with cladding diameters of 125 µm to 720 µm.

3D Scope is an interferometer for the end face evaluation of ferrules and fibers. The robust benchtop device is used in production where the interferometer’s main features can play out their strengths: it is fast, precise, and economical. In addition, it is insensitive enough to vibrations to carry out measurements in your hand.

The 3D Scope is connected to a PC using a USB 2.0 interface, which acts as the power supply and carries out the real-time control. The BLINK software controls the interferometer measurements and creates an Excel report.

Important Features of the 3D Scope

  • Single fiber measurement – PC, APC, and cleave angle on bare fibers
  • Simple and robust mechanical design
  • Insensitive to vibrations
  • Automatic measurement of radius, apex offset, fiber protrusion etc.
  • Simple operation via BLINK software

DAISI: Digital Automated Interferometer for Surface Inspection.

The DAISI interferometer can measure PC and APC ferrules, connectors, and bare fibers. Operator errors can be ruled out – one simply has to push a button to perform a measurement. Automatic apex calibration is made possible by the servo-controlled reference mirror.

The DAISI meets the requirements for application in a production environment: uncompressed images are transferred in real time to a PC or laptop via a USB 2.0 interface. The interferometer is equipped with adapters for most connector types. The high reproducibility of its measurements makes the DAISI a reliable tool for industrial application. In addition, it is insensitive enough to vibrations to carry out measurements in your hand.

Important Features of the DAISI

  • Fast autofocus
  • Simple and fast switching between PC and APC measurement
  • White-light option for a larger area of fiber height
  • Automatic measurement of radius, apex offset, fiber protrusion etc.
  • Measurement of the fiber angle in bare fibers with high precision
  • Simple operation via BLINK software

The DAISI MT is a combined white-light / red-light interferometer for the measurement of single fiber connectors and multi-fiber connectors. It has become the industry standard for measurements of MT connectors and is used both in the field and in production.

The benchtop device is insensitive to vibrations. Thanks to its autofocus and fast USB 2.0 interface, measurements are performed within a very short amount of time. The switch from APC to PC is particularly easy and fast since the ferrule holder remains the same. The automated end face measurements are based on current standards and are extremely reproducible.

The measurement data can be output as a report or exported in the form of an Excel spreadsheet.

Important Features of the DAISI MT

  • One device for single-fiber and multi-fiber connectors as well as bare fibers
  • Fast autofocus
  • Simple and fast switching between PC and APC measurement without alterations
  • White light and red light
  • Automatic measurement of radius, apex offset, fiber protrusion etc.
  • Measurement of the fiber angle in bare fibers with high precision
  • Simple operation via BLINK software

Modular measurement system for measuring the concentricity of optical fibers or optical ferrules. This can be carried out by exchanging the measurement adapters of the basic device.

Ferrule Module (Measurement prior to Gluing in the Fiber)

  • Measurement of concentricity of the ferrule bore in relation to the outer diameter of the ferrule
  • Determination of the angular position of the bore in relation to the rotation lock (tuning optical connectors)
  • Measurement of the diameter of the bore
  • Detection of deviations from the round shape of the ferrule

Connector Module (Measurement following Gluing in the Fiber)

  • Measurement of the concentricity of the fiber core in relation to the outer diameter of the ferrule
  • Determination of the position of the core in relation to the rotation lock for tuning the optical connectors

The VFI interferometric inspection system is used to analyze optical fibers directly after cleaving and polishing. This makes it possible to inspect the surface quality and flatness of fiber end faces.

This benchtop device is used in production, R&D, and quality control.

The ProView from NorthLab is an interferometer for the measurement and inspection of fiber end surfaces with cladding diameters of 125 µm to 720 µm. Designed specifically for production lines, which require easy, fast, and accurate end surface inspection, it is also well suited for R&D environments and the maintenance of cleaving tools.

Its compact design makes the ProView ideal for production benches and for use with fusion splicers, cleavers, and other preparation tools.

The most important features of the ProView

  • For fiber cladding diameters of 125 μm to 720 μm
  • 2D and 3D topography
  • PC control via graphical user interface with fringe and inspection mode
  • Very short test time with automatic angle estimation
  • Optional PASS/FAIL gap angle display
  • Testing of end faces for flatness, squareness, and impurities
  • Record and save 2D and 3D images and cleaver data
