Voltage & Current Mode IR Detectors
The latest Differential Pyroelectric Detectors from LASER COMPONENTS offer exceptional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) through two amplified signals that when added together produce enhanced signal with low noise levels.
Compared to the bestseller L2100 series, we were able to double the signal of the LD21xx and DD31XX series. At the same time, the noise was kept almost consistently low. The LASER COMPONENTS R&D team has taken out the bag of tricks and optimized the components used accordingly. The actual improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio is therefore significantly higher than the purely theoretical value of 1.4.
In the LD2100 and DD3151, the two amplified signals are put out separately (i.e., the detector has a real differential output, which also makes differential signal routing possible): Any external interference signals that are picked up are eliminated by common mode cancellation. The LiTaO3 LD2100 and DD3151 Series allow for simple wiring in which the two signal outputs are fed directly to the inputs of a differential A/D converter. The DD3151 is equipped with a DLaTGS 1.3 mm element with an integrated low noise JFET.
The Differential Pyroelectric Detectors are offered with various IR windows for applications such as FTIR spectroscopy to Flame Detection. An optional nichrome metal electrode and an HDPE plastic window is available for THz detection due to its high level of transmission at long wavelengths. Other suitable windows for THz applications include polished, uncoated, silicon, and CVD diamond windows.

Panchromatic, photoconductive and thermal detectors
InGaAs PIN Photodiodes
Modern InGaAs PIN photodiodes are panchromatic and convert broadband light to photocurrents in the Vis-NIR range. Concretely speaking, this means a sensitivity range from 500 nm to 1700 nm for regular InGaAs and – in increments – up to 2600 nm for extended InGaAs. Variations for data transmission are not panchromatic.
PbS and PbSe Detectors
PbS is a standard SWIR semiconductor detector (1 - 3.3 µm) whereas PbSe is used in the MWIR range (1 - 4.7 µm when uncooled; up to 5.2 µm when cooled). Our lead salt detectors are photoconductive; the detector resistance is reduced during illumination. The crystal structure is polycrystalline and is produced via chemical deposition.
Pyroelectric IR Detectors
A pyroelectric IR detector is a thermal detector in that it responds to the change in heat (IR) absorbed on its surface. Thermal detectors are polychromatic with a very wide spectral bandwidth.
The nature of the pyroelectric effect is that in a highly-ordered crystal (or ceramic), a temperature change in the element causes its atoms to move slightly out of position. This rearranges its electrical charge, which is measured in the electrodes on its surface.
The pyroelectric effect is found in many materials. The most commonly-used materials are deuterated lanthanum α alanine-doped triglycine sulfate (DLaTGS) and lithium tantalate (LTO).

FAQs
What you should know about our DD3151X Series
What are the main use cases for the Differential DLaTGS Detectors?
Applications encompass spectroscopy using FTIR and the detection of THz radiation. However, more specialized applications, such as measuring and monitoring laser power at long wavelengths, are also observed. These high-performance detectors offer enhanced output and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for demanding applications.
What wavelength range can the Differential Pyroelectric Detectors measure?
The Differential DLaTGS Detectors can be equipped with a variety of infrared transmitting windows.
A widely used option in the industry is the KBr window, which transmits up to 30 μm and can come with a parylene moisture protective coating. Other available IR windows include BaF₂, CaF₂, CsI, CVD diamond, silicon, and ZnSe. For THz wavelengths, the HDPE window transmits well beyond 60 μm. Detailed information about the full range of IR windows and their properties can be found here: Choice of filters for pyroelectric detectors.
What is the detection speed of the DLaTGS Differential Detectors?
Factory calibrated at 1 kHz, the differential DLaTGS detectors can operate up to approximately 10 kHz. They have shown a rapid response to changes in IR flux, meeting the requirements for IR detectors used in FTIR applications.
What are the allowable operating conditions for the Differential Pyroelectric Detectors?
The detectors do not require cooling but should be maintained within an operating temperature range of -20 to +55 °C. It is crucial to keep the detectors in non-condensing environments, as some IR transmitting windows like KBr and CsI are hygroscopic and should not be exposed to high humidity.
What are the advantages of the DD3151X compared to typical pyroelectric detectors
The detector is designed to eliminate electromagnetic interference (EMI) and significantly improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). With its patented differential connection method, the DD31 boosts SNR by 1.4 times, ensuring cleaner, more accurate signal output in noisy environments, such as those affected by processor clocks and line interference. Ultimately, the dual-output signals can be easily combined via subtraction, doubling the final output while minimizing noise.
