Series 300/400 Power Monitors

Photonics News No 38

UK38-0220

Our Eigenlight power monitors measure light travelling through a fibre optic cable. Unlike conventional power metres they utilise a patented process to measure light in-line, allowing installation directly into systems for real-time continuous optical power measurement. Housed in a convenient lightweight plastic package, these power monitors are designed for versatility and ease of use.

There is no on-off switch, instead, the device turns on automatically when it detects light, and off when light is no longer travelling through it. This convenient feature, which allows these power monitors to be virtually installed and forgotten about, is enabled by the device’s low power circuitry.  The proprietary ASIC chip gives the power monitor an ultra long battery life of 3 years, even under continuous use, which is comparable to a battery’s leakage current.  Without the frequent need to change the batteries, the power monitor is an environmentally friendly technology that is also convenient for a variety of insistent applications.

The power monitors are bi-directional, but detect light propagating in one direction only. This feature provides an advantage for use in bi-directional systems, and also safeguards against any inaccuracy that might result by back reflection within an optical system.

In addition, the series 400 power monitor-attenuators include a variable attenuator, allowing fingertip control of optical power, while providing a continuous readout of the power being delivered. Switch between absolute and relative power reading with the push of a button, choose fast or slow mode operation to change the measurement sampling rate for different applications.

The analogue output option allows for remote data-logging with the use of a Volt metre, and the dual displays on the front and back and optional magnetic mount makes it possible to install the device just about anywhere.

The Series 300/400 power monitors are available with several different options.
