Multi-Mode Fibers - Graded Index
In gradient-index fibers, the refractive index decreases exponentially from the center of the core to the cladding. Therefore, the mode dispersion of these optical fibers is less pronounced than that of step-index fibers. Higher bandwidths are thus possible. With a comparable numerical aperture, they exhibit less pulse distortion. For these reasons, GI fibers are mainly used for data transmission.
