Polarization Maintaining Fibers

Polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers use a particularly high birefringence to keep the linear polarization of the coupled light stable at wavelengths between 488 nm and more than 1550 nm. Such optical fibers are used in biomedicine and spectroscopy. They can also be found in delay lines, modulators, and interferometric sensors.

Due to the bow-tie design, the polarization of coupled light (488 nm to 1550 nm) remains stable in polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers.

Polyimide-coated PM fibers can withstand temperatures of up to 300°C for long periods of time. For a short period of time, even temperatures of 400°C are not a problem.

The modes of PM telecom fibers correspond to those of standard telecom fibers. Splicing losses are less than 0.1 dB, and the extinction ratio of the polarization is less than -32 dB.

Fiber optic gyroscopes with SAPs in a bow-tie arrangement offer high birefringence and a constant extinction ratio of polarization.

Unlike standard germanium-doped fibers, polarization-maintaining fibers with a quartz glass core do not exhibit a photodarkening effect in short-wave light.

The fiber-based Zing polarizers allow only one polarization state to pass. This is due to the extreme birefringence caused by the bow tie geometry of the core.
