Fiber Optic and Network Monitoring

These systems are used in the monitoring of optical fiber networks because increasing security requirements and high expectations regarding the availability of digital services make online monitoring of the optical fiber as a transmission medium more and more of a necessity.

Based on products for network analysis and package recording, so-called NPMD products are also offered; these products examine network data and perform a complete package analysis.

BOTDR – Brillouin Reflectometer

OTU-8000 / MTS-8000

With the Brillouin OTDR technique temperature changes and stress on a fiber can be accurately localized to within a few meters.

Viavi’s BOTDR modules use Brillouin scattering to accurately measure temperature and stress along a fiber optic cable. Even over long distances, temperature differences and stress on the fiber can be localized with a resolution of a few meters. The OTU-8000 rack can be used for permanent real-time monitoring and integrated into an ONMSi system. This makes the BOTDR the ideal addition to the spatially-resolved control of KRITIS monitoring systems. In addition to the rack version, a BOTDR module is offered that can be integrated into the mobile MTS-8000 platform.

As part of an OTU-8000 or a comprehensive ONMSi system, BOTDR measurement is a welcome addition to the control of critical infrastructures. A single fiber for the test signal is sufficient to monitor the entire cable over long distances (up to 200 km).

Possible Applications:

  • Pipelines
  • Telecommunication
  • Power cables
  • Building surveillance

As part of the MTS-8000 modular multi-test platform, the BOTDR solution offers additional measurement options for setting up and maintaining high-speed networks. The technician can check cables with lengths between 100 m and 200 km on site. For distances of up to 10 km, changes in temperature and stress can be located precisely to the meter.

Advantages:

  • Simultaneous measurement of stress and temperature
  • Single-ended
  • Measurement on just one fiber
  • Compact, modular, and lightweight
  • BOTDR surveillance
