Fiber Optic Field Equipment

In optical measurement technology, different measurement devices are used to test optical fibers. In addition to analyzers and power measurement devices, optical sources that can be readout with the help of monitors are also used.

Optical Light Sources

OLS7 Laser Source

Optical light sources for the installation and maintenance of fiber optic single-mode and multi-mode networks.

Inexpensive and comprehensive laser and LED emitter models required for the installation, maintenance, and testing of optical fiber networks.

Sources for single-mode fibers and multi-mode fibers, as well as those with up to four wavelengths for applications in FTTx networks and the LAN environment, are available.

ALS LED sources are used particularly in the aerospace industry.

The sources introduced here are designed for single-mode fibers. With wavelengths of 1310 nm and 1550 nm, the common telecommunications wavelengths are covered.

OLS-35

SmartPocketTM OLS-35 laser sources are inexpensive and compact. They can be battery operated or used with a micro-USB port power supply. Calibration is only necessary every three years. Add this laser source to the SmartPocketTM Optical Test Kit.

OLS2

The OLS2 laser source emits laser light in a continuous wave (cw) or modulated with a test tone (1 kHz or 2 kHz). It is operated using the WaveID method. In this method, the light is coded to allow the receiver to recognize the transmitted wavelength. This leads to a reduction in the testing times. In addition, it is not necessary to set the correct wavelength on the receiver.

OLS1

The OLS1 LED sources emit at 850 nm and 1300 nm. These units can be used for both 50 µm and 62.5 µm fibers. They can be battery operated or are available with a power supply unit on an optional basis.

OLS-34: For LAN/WAN Access and Enterprise MM Networks

SmartPocketTM OLS-34 multi-mode LED sources can be used in 50/125 µm MM fibers. The central wavelengths include 850 nm and 1300 nm. They can be used with all standard connector types.

Three Wavelengths – The OLS7 Series

The OLS7 series includes laser sources with three wavelengths that are used in the measurement of the insertion loss of single-mode fibers in combination with optical power meters. They are used in the testing of FTTx networks.

The stabilized laser source facilitates reliable test results that meet the current TIA/EIA and ISO requirements. The following types are available:

  • OLS7-FTTH:
    1310 nm in upstream
    1490 nm/1550 nm in downstream
  • OLS7-FTTx:
1310 nm, 1490 nm, 1625 nm for measurements in the transmission band or outside of the operating wavelengths at 1625 nm
  • OLS7-3:
    1310 nm, 1550 nm, 1625 nm
Three wavelengths from one source for single-mode applications such as, for example, telecommunications or CATV

OLS-36 Series

This single measurement instrument combines four wavelengths for the measurement of MM fibers and SM fibers. The SmartPocketTM OLS-36 laser source is equipped with the following wavelengths: 850 nm, 1300 nm, 1310 nm, and 1550 nm.

OLS4 Quad Output with Wave ID

The output ports of the combined LED/laser source are as follows:

  • Multi-mode output: 850/1300 nm LED
  • Single-mode output: 1310/1550 nm laser (additionally with a 2 kHz tone)

The following output options are available for selection: cw, WaveID, or dual wavelength WaveID. WaveID yields shorter testing times: Each wavelength is coded with a unique WaveID code. Together with the corresponding power meter, two wavelengths can be transmitted and received simultaneously per test. This increases efficiency and saves time.

This handy and versatile SmartClass light source features a specific wavelength combination that makes it ideally suited for the qualification and certification of fiber optic networks, such as long-distance, metro and access networks of telecom providers, data centers or local area networks (LAN). In the field OLS-85 can easily run on battery for a whole working day. It is so light and handy that it may even be used on high masts.

In tandem with the OLP-85 optical power level meter, the light source provides numerous automated functions with comprehensive measurement reports. Together with the P5000i inspection microscope, it creates pass/fail analyses for fiber end surfaces at the touch of a button.

Both 850 nm and 1300 nm ALS LED sources are used in the measurement of multimode fibers; they guarantee stable 85%/85% coupling conditions. This device is designed for 62.5/125 µm and 50/125 µm fibers.

This compact source is operated via Li ion batteries, which last 48 hours.
