Polarity and IL/RL Measurement for MPO/MTP(T) Cables

OP415

Multi-fiber connectors like MPO or MTP(T) require special set-ups and detectors.

Small-footprint multi-fiber connectors such as MPO or MTP(T) are conquering not only data centers but numerous other industries. The production of MPO assemblies requires special measuring station set-up for characterization and qualification. The same applies, for example, to the inspection of delivered goods in the data center. In addition to IL and RL measurements, polarity control also plays an important role, because reversed polarities on MPO/MTP(T) connectors are among the most common errors in multi-fiber connector cabling.

OptoTest’s OP415 polarity analyzer can quickly and efficiently check the fiber assignment and channel configuration of MTP/MPO cables. The integrated color display allows the user to see the path of each channel at a glance. The device is designed for tests on 24-fiber configurations but can easily be adapted to versions with eight and twelve fibers. All the user needs to do is replace the cover plate with the appropriate slots. The polarity types A, B, and C are pre-installed for twelve and twenty-four fibers. However, the OP415 is also capable of storing other manufacturer-specific polarities.

The OP415 was primarily developed for use in the laboratory and offers crucial advantages in the manufacture of optical ribbon cables, among other things. The allocation of the individual channels is an important factor in the functionality of MTP/MPO cables.

The OP-SPHR integrating sphere reflects and distributes the incident light evenly, so that no artifacts occur during the measurement. The spheres are therefore considered one of the most stable and professional measurement solutions. With its screw-on universal interface, it can be integrated into any existing IL measurement systems. OP-SPHR can be used with multi-fiber connectors with up to 72 single fibers. Adapters also allow for measurements on single-fiber connectors and bare fibers.

The external detectors of the OPRH series can be used to perform power measurements even under difficult conditions such as particularly rigid cables or special assemblies developed for military or space applications. Their BNC interface allows them to be connected to OptoTest's proven measurement platforms.

The OP940 and OP960 IL/RL measurement platforms are also available in versions for multiple fiber plugs and can be connected to the OP-SPHR integrating sphere and external detectors of the OPRH series via their BNC connector. In combination with a corresponding switch, this creates efficient and fast measurement solutions for characterizing MPO/MTP(T) or other multiple fiber connectors.
