MAP - Multiple Application Platform

MAP – MAP is the measuring system developed by VIAVI for industrial and laboratory use. There are different measuring platforms available that vary in their number of connection slots. For these platforms plug-in modules for various measurements are available, such as, for example, light sources, filters, or optical switches.

MAP Power and Loss Analyzer

MAP-mVOA

To measure the power and loss in optical fibers, the MAP system offers modules for power measurement and return loss; attenuators and back reflectors are also available.

The MAP system has different modules available to measure power and loss in optical fibers. These include

  • MAP power meter – mOPM
InGaAs detectors for the wavelength range 800-1650 nm; for 10 to -80 dBm
  • MAP variable optical attenuator – mVOA
Optical attenuators depending on the model for wavelengths between 750 nm and 1650 nm. Used in level adjustment.
  • MAP insertion loss and return loss meter – mPCT
    Single-mode and multi-mode modules available.

The mOPM power meters are available in different configurations, including versions with a front panel detector connection or remote detector heads. One plug-in module can house one, two, or four detectors.

The integrated detectors made of indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs) are available with different performance grades and are suited for the power measurement of single-mode and multi-mode fibers. All versions offer high accuracy, linearity, and low polarization-dependent losses.

Detectors with a high performance grade are thermally stabilized to allow for a wide wavelength range. Some modules make it possible to achieve a dynamic range of up to 110 dB. High input level versions make it possible to achieve signal measurements with an optical power output of up to +27 dBm.

Features of the mOPM MAP Power Measurement Modules

  • Front panel detectors or remote detector heads
  • One, two, or four detector inlets per module
  • Sampling rate of 250 kHz for high-speed applications
  • Operating wavelengths between 750 nm and 1700 nm
  • Module with max. optical input power up to 27 dBm
  • For SM and MM fibers

The mVBR variable back reflectors are plug-in modules that allow the adjustment of back reflections and, subsequently, the characterization of the sensitivity of transmitters and optical systems to back reflections.

A mVOA variable optical attenuator is used to adjust the power level. It is based on a step motor that guarantees the quick repeatability of adjustments made. This MAP module is characterized by low intrinsic insertion loss.

Attenuators with tap couplers or with internal power measurement modules to record the optical level are available on an optional basis.

Features of the mVOA MAP Module

  • Intrinsic insertion loss < 1.0 dB
  • Adjustable speed of attenuation up to 25 dB/s
  • SM and MM versions
  • Up to two independent attenuators per module

These plug-in modules for the MAP platform are referred to as passive components/connector test solution (PCT). The following measurements can be achieved with these modules:

  • Insertion loss
  • Return loss
  • Physical length
  • Polarity of fiber optic patch cables and connectors

These plug-in modules are made for the MAP200 platform and can be configured for applications in research and development, production, or product qualification. These modules are available for all standard fiber types – from single-mode fibers to OM1 and OM4 fibers.

Applications of MAP mPCT Modules

  • Characterization of IR/RL/length of optical connectors and cable assemblies
  • Passive solutions for structured cabling and optical splitters
  • Automated testing of multifiber assemblies, such as MPO/MTP fiber assemblies
  • Solutions for MM and SM fibers
  • Verifying polarity and continuity of multifiber assemblies
  • Measurement of return loss of line cards and receptacle-based transponders
