Multi-Mode Fibres - Step Index

Step-index fibres are used for the transmission of laser power in sensor technology, for industrial applications, and in medical technology. They get their name from the step-shaped refractive-index profile between the fibre core and fibre cladding. The refractive indices in the core and cladding are constant. The refractive index of the core glass is always higher.
A distinction is made between launch fibres with a core diametre of from 40 μm to 105 μm and large-core fibres with a core diametre of from 200 μm to 2000 μm.

New Possibilities: UV LEDs and lasers are more cost effective than deuterium and xenon lamps. As a result, optical fibres are becoming more and more interesting for UV transmission.

Step-index fibres optimised for ultraviolet and visible wavelengths are often referred to as high-OH fibres.

Standard and dual-clad step-index fibres with a low-OH core for wavelengths between 650 nm and 1900 nm.

Broadband fibres support wavelengths from the UV to near infrared range. They are ideal for spectroscopy.
