Photonic Components
for the
Medical Market

Medical Technology

Optical and optoelectronic components and systems perform important tasks in medical technology. For example, they enable more precise diagnostics and gentler therapy than many conventional methods. At LASER COMPONENTS, we develop and manufacture laser and sensor components according to our customers’ specifications. In this way, we help to make medical procedures more effective, safer, and more comfortable for patients and professional staff.

Laser Modules: Precise positioning thanks to optoelectronic technologies

Cutting-edge photonics for modern medical devices

At LASER COMPONENTS, we offer a wide range of customized components for medical equipment. These include laser optics for beam guidance in medical laser systems as well as autoclavable coatings for end optics that may potentially be contaminated in the system.

We also bring extensive experience in the development and production of components for radiological devices such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. One of the products we manufacture are fiber bundles made of plastic fibers that are unaffected by the strong magnetic fields of these devices. We also offer point, line and cross laser modules for patient positioning, which are used to mark the correct position of the patient.

Fiber optic assemblies from our manufacturing facility guide light for laser therapy or for illumination during microinvasive procedures.

This is complemented by optoelectronic components such as IR detectors, which enable precise measurement of breathing air in ventilators.

Typical Areas of Application

in the medical market

Positioning and marking –
Precise alignment for diagnostics and therapy

In order to obtain meaningful diagnoses in MRI, CT, and other imaging procedures, the patient must be positioned correctly. Speed and precision play a crucial role here, as the patient should not be exposed to radiation for too long. With the help of laser markers, this unnecessary exposure can be avoided.

Such positioning lasers must be compact, precise, and safe for the eyes. Depending on the application, dot, line, or cross-hair beams are used. Dot lasers are mainly used as reference markers for precise therapy, line lasers are used for exact body alignment, and cross-hair lasers are used wherever orientation in two axes is required (e.g., for X-ray images).

Pilot lasers play a special role: invisible light in the infrared spectrum is often used in radiation therapy and surgery. This makes orientation difficult for the attending physician. For this reason, a visible laser dot indicates the exact position of the IR beam.

The FLEXPOINT® laser modules from LASER COMPONENTS are available in all sizes and with many different beam shapes. All parameters can be adapted to the specific requirements of the respective positioning application and thus enable efficient, safe diagnoses and treatments – even in specialized surgical environments. For example, the output power of each module is configured to match the desired laser class.

Laser therapy –
Gentle and precise treatments

Laser therapy has replaced “traditional” treatment methods in many areas of medicine. The advantages are obvious: it enables targeted, minimally invasive interventions and thus often ensures better results and faster recovery.

The requirements for lasers are as varied as the applications. For example, the use of UV excimer lasers to correct defective vision in ophthalmology is well known. Various procedures are used in laser surgery: Coagulation for hemostasis, ablation for tissue removal, and the laser scalpel for precise incisions. Dermatologists use low-energy lasers for skin ablation, hair removal, and tattoo removal.

With an extensive product portfolio, LASER COMPONENTS offers various optical and optoelectronic components for medical laser therapy. These include, for example, laseroptics, fiber optic assemblies ond pilot lasers: Our fiber optic cables are manufactured in accordance with ISO 13485 specifications and our optics are coated using state-of-the-art processes for precise application.

Individual Products
Together with major OEM customers, we are constantly developing new customized solutions for safe and effective patient treatment.

Other Applications

in Medical Technology

In addition to patient positioning and laser therapy, we offer solutions for numerous other medical applications:

Breath gas analysis
IR detectors play a crucial role in monitoring CO2, O2 and other respiratory gases in anesthesia and intensive care. In ventilators, they measure the carbon dioxide content of the exhaled air to check whether the patient has absorbed the oxygen provided. PbSe detectors are often used here, as they can detect the smallest fluctuations in the CO2 concentration without additional cooling and can be integrated into medical devices to save space.

Telemedicine
Wearables such as smartwatches and sensor shirts could soon revolutionize healthcare by continuously monitoring values such as pulse and blood pressure. It may even soon be possible to carry out non-invasive blood glucose measurements. Without the IR detectors in these small, useful devices, such measurements would be inconceivable.

Manufacturing medical components
In many manufacturing processes, there is hardly a tool as precise as the laser beam. Medical technology in particular benefits from this, as the finest structures often have to be created and materials particularly gently processed. With laser technology, manufacturers can guarantee high quality and a long lifetime for their products. In addition, this flexible technology is ideally suited to the production of individual items. Every person is different, and this also applies to many medical products that are used inside the body.
