Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS)

Enhancing security and efficiency over long distances

Precision Measurement Over Kilometers

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) transforms existing optical fiber lines into high-precision sensor arrays with thousands of measurement points, detecting vibrations, movements, and acoustic events in real time with high spatial resolution across hundreds of kilometers.

Listening Through Light

Laser interrogators emit tunable laser light into the fiber and measure shifts in the reflected light. Thus, it becomes possible to detect and localize even the smallest vibrations without using active sensors.

High-Security Monitoring with DAS

DAS is primarily used for 24/7 monitoring of critical infrastructure along pipelines, railroad tracks, power and telecom lines, as well as data centers or perimeter security. At LASER COMPONENTS, we offer measuring and evaluation devices for all these applications. Our portfolio supports a wide range of scenarios and distances – from single segments to comprehensive monitoring.

Technology and Functionality

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) uses Rayleigh backscattering in single-mode fibers to precisely detect movements and acoustic events. A coherent laser sends short light pulses into the optical fiber. At every microscopic irregularity, a tiny fraction of this light is reflected, creating a characteristic scattering pattern. Movements, acoustic events, or temperature changes along the line alter this pattern, and the system detects these deviations in real time. The exact location of an event can be calculated based on the time it takes for the light to travel from the source to the detector.

Modern DAS systems leverage powerful evaluation algorithms, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to differentiate between signal types. They can be individually trained to distinguish unusual events from everyday signals, providing a detailed, continuous situational overview of the monitored area.

By combining proven sensor technology, advanced signal processing, and integrated alarm management, DAS creates a unified monitoring system that reliably protects critical infrastructure against unwanted events—whether natural or human-made.

Fields of Application

Tube inspection Tube inspection

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) has become an established technology across numerous sectors:

  • Pipeline Monitoring: Detection of leaks, digging activity, and tampering along the route.
  • Energy and Industrial Facilities: Condition monitoring of equipment to improve safety and operational efficiency.
  • Data Centers and Communication Infrastructure: Localization of vibrations or mechanical impacts on critical fiber routes.
  • Transportation: Condition monitoring of railway tracks, vehicle detection, and warning systems for landslides or obstacles.
  • Perimeter and Border Security: Early detection of movement or approach along fences and sensitive installations.
  • Power and Utility Networks: Protection against ground movement, external interference, or structural changes to cable routes.

Advantages of the Technology

  • Utilization of existing fiber-optic infrastructure
  • Continuous monitoring over long distances
  • Integration with additional sensor data (e.g., temperature, strain)
  • Low maintenance requirements and high reliability
  • No active components along the sensing path
  • Immediate event detection and alerting

The combination of these features makes DAS a key technology for modern, networked monitoring systems—and a cornerstone of next-generation infrastructure surveillance.
