In optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR), the propagation length and reflection properties of light in the optical fiber are tested. A laser pulse is coupled into the fiber and the scattered light measured for a specific duration of time. This allows the losses generated through splicing, optical fiber attenuation, or reflection to be calculated.

Universal Modular OTDR Measuring Platforms

Retroreflector modules for the installation and maintenance of FTTx networks.


Here you will find the OTDR plug-ins from Viavi for the MTS-2000 and MTS-4000 base units for FTTx network applications. These modules offer automatic and bidirectional OTDR measurements.

Two versions are available:

  • 4100 Series OTDR Modules
    Interchangeable OTDR modules for metro and FTTx applications
  • 4100 Series FiberCompleteTM Modules
    Automatic, bidirectional IL, ORL, and OTDR test modules for the installation, activation, and maintenance of FTTx/PON, access, and metro networks.

To test optical fiber transmission in FTTx/PON networks, the 4100 series OTDR module is used. This unit is used in automatic fiber inspection and IEC pass/fail analysis.

This measuring module is ideally suited for the installation, setup, and maintenance of FTTx/PON access, metro, and enterprise networks – at given wavelengths, this module locates errors reliably in PON networks.

The 4100 series OTDR modules contain an integrated power meter and an optical source in just one module.

These modules have the following features:

  • Automatic detection of macro-bending
  • Overview table of results with pass/fail analysis
  • Bidirectional OTDR analysis
  • Report drawn up quickly directly in the unit.



  • Dynamic range up to 42 dB and 256,000 reference points
  • PON optimized to perform tests through splitters up to 1 x 128 in size
  • Quad module: Combines a single-mode and multi-mode module in one unit
  • Different versions with up to three wavelengths in one module: 1310, 1490, 1550, 1625, and 1650 nm
  • Measurement of two wavelengths (1310 nm and 1550 nm) using a single port
  • Measurements in operation at 1625 nm or 1650 nm



The OFS-100 FiberTrace and OFS-200 FiberCable reporting software is available for comprehensive postproduction of test results on a PC.

The FiberComplete modules function almost on their own: After connection, up to ten measurements are performed automatically at the push of a single button. This single unit contains as many measurement instruments.

The following measurements are possible: automatic, bidirectional measurement of insertion loss (IL); bidirectional optical return loss (ORL) using an OCWR method; and bidirectional OTDR or fault-finder testing.

Two FiberCompleteTM modules are required for complete bidirectional measurements. Communication between the measurement devices is implemented simultaneously via the fiber being tested. Highlights include the real-time continuity test, pass/fail analysis, and the direct generation of reports without having to connect to a PC. The modules can be used with the MTS-2000 and MTS-4000 base units.

The FiberCompleteTM modules have the following features:

  • Step-by-step assistant for the first IL/ORL reference test
  • Management of results for fibers and cables
  • Predefined and user-defined threshold values
  • Compatible with metro access (MA) and metro PON (MP) OTDR modules


The FiberTrace (OFS-100) and FiberCable (OFS-200) PC software is available for extensive postprocessing of the test results.

The MTS-4000 can also be equipped with triple-play service software on an optional basis. This software allows comprehensive IP testing to be conducted. This includes the following:

  • IPTV, Video Service Test
    IP multicast test
    IP unicast test
    I-frame decoding and display
    The video quality is tested, which includes the analysis of video data and data packet statistics.
  • VoIP, Voice Test
    VoIP telephone is emulated during testing.
    Evaluation of voice-over IP data packet and sound quality (MOS and R factor)
    Supports Cisco SCCP, SIP, MGCP, H.323, and Nortel Unistim protocols
  • Data Transmission Test
    Provides a web browser
    Checks the data throughput (FTP, HTTP), including PING & trace route services of 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, as well as of xDSL modules on an optional basis
    Scans the virtual local area network (VLAN) for current configuration and activity
