Internet of Things
Faster and More Flexible Data Networks
The connected future also requires adequate infrastructure. For applications such as 4K video streaming, augmented reality, virtual gaming, and the internet of things (IoT) to play out their advantages, high transmission rates must be available across large areas. This is exactly what the 400G standard promises, which was recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2017.
400Gbit/s
At 400 Gbit/s, the transmission speed is four times that of 100G networks, which have become the mainstream solution since 2010. For network operators, this technology offers further crucial advantages: The higher the bandwidth of a cable, the easier it is to manage data traffic. The same applies to hardware requirements: even if all optical elements are included, one 400G port for a router is cheaper than four individual 100G ports. This also significantly reduces power consumption.
The migration to 400G brings with it many new technical requirements. For example, the transmission speed is so high that a new modulation method is required. In the on-off keying method used to date, the binary signal is transmitted by repeatedly switching a laser on and off. The PAM-4 pulse amplitude modulation used with 400G uses four level values and thus achieves twice the modulation rate. However, this method is also more sensitive to noise. Changes are also necessary in other network components. These investments are worthwhile because they result in a highly flexible and scalable data network.
