Attenuation measurements are an important means of controlling the performance of hard-clad silica (HCS) and polymer optical fibers (POF) in data transmission systems. POF fibers are particularly known for their high attenuation and are therefore mainly used for short distances.
A measuring set always consists of a light source and a power meter. On the emitting end, it must be ensured that the LED provides a stabilized optical output power at 660 nm (POF) and 850 nm (MM glass fibers). This is achieved by using a modulated current source with selectable forward current. On the receiving side, the light is detected by the power meter. Depending on the objective, the results are displayed as power (μW or dBm), or attenuation (dB).
