From the Mayans to the GDPR!
Dear readers,
We are still in the summer for a few weeks, which is a great time to be active. Whether you are an avid globetrotter, a cruise enthusiast, an accomplished athlete or an avid moviegoer, realize that laser technology has been used in one way or another to maximize your knowledge, understand your interactions with the earth and the environment or to give you the most elaborate of experiences.
If you fall into the first category, the sites occupied by the Mayan civilisation may be an attractive destination. Thanks to the introduction of modern laser technology, for example using LiDAR (laser detection and ranging) these are now places we can enjoy and explore even more. Our article will tell you how the use of this technology has allowed the discovery of sites previously well hidden under the dense vegetation of the rain forest.
If you are a little less adventurous and prefer the cozy loungers on the upper deck next to the pool, imagine that the several hundred ton behemoth you are riding across the oceans on has been precisely assembled using laser and sensor technology.
The examples go on and on, and you will discover many more as you flip through these pages.
Incidentally, the reason you are receiving this issue of Photonics News today is because there is information stored in our system that gives us your permission to send it to you. This indication was given to us in person, by telephone, at a trade show or on a visit. In some cases, this permission was given a long time ago. As in the past, unsubscribing is just a click away. Photonics News, our company newspaper, has been around for more than a decade. The vast majority of comments have been positive, often encouraging us to continue, or with specific questions about our products or the applications we present.
Of course, with each issue we receive feedback from readers indicating their preference on how to receive our newsletter. We take this into account and make sure we respect your wishes, even if it means unsubscribing you.
For most of you who enjoy reading us, we will continue to look for interesting topics to share with you.
So, happy reading!

Piercing through the Jungle
Lost & Found
When you go on a journey, you hope for an extraordinary experience. The allure of distant countries lies in their exotic landscapes, unfamiliar customs, and remains of long-forgotten advanced civilizations. Historical sites such as Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu, and Tikal (see photo) have proven to be real tourist magnets – and not all secrets of the past have been revealed yet. Today, laser technology provides archaeologists with information of which they were previously unaware. Just recently, new discoveries about the Maya have caused a sensation.
Lasers for Leisure Time
Laser Material Processing and Sensor Technology
Laser material processing:
In addition to the familiar processes for clothing assembly, laser welding has now been discovered as a completely new technology in the clothing industry. The Swiss company Leister Technologies AG is developing this market to industrial maturity.
Sensor technology:
Today, modern laser technology is used to assemble many individual pieces in the block construction of a cruise ship with millimetre precision in order to be able to work precisely and efficiently.
