Reflectivity and durability are crucial quality features of optical components used in reflecting telescopes. In both aspects, dielectric mirrors are superior to their metallic counterparts: their hard surfaces last longer and therefore require less maintenance. A high reflectance leads to higher efficiency in mirrors and other optical components and results in more light being reflected to the eyepiece. The image becomes brighter, which makes it possible to see even less luminous celestial bodies.
LASER COMPONENTS consistently invests in the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities. This includes a large IBS coater with two broadband monitoring (BBM) systems, one of which covers the typical BBM range in the visible spectrum and the second covers additional infrared wavelengths. This makes it possible to monitor the production of broadband optics during the coating process. The dielectric mirrors produced in this way achieve an average reflectance of 98% in the wavelength range from 390 nm to 950 nm. These values can be achieved for optics with diameters of up to 300 mm. Corresponding metal mirrors typically achieve a reflectance of a maximum of 96%.
