Topic: Characterization of a Single Photon Counting Module
with High Photon Detection Efficiency
and Low Dark Count Rate

Abstract

This paper provides a detailed overview of the structure and functionalities of a Single Photon Avalanche Detector (SPAD) with Very Low K (VloK) and a Single Photon Counting Module (SPCM) with a fast Active Quenching Circuit (AQC). It further discusses the impact of temperature and overvoltage on the intrinsic parameters of the SPAD. The novel AQC performance opens a wide range of possibilities for SPCM functionality, such as dead time or timing jitter. The effects on other SPCM parameters are examined and discussed.

Single photon counting modules, also known as SPCMs, count individual photons with high quantum efficiency APD.

Similar to photomultipliers, avalanche photodiodes are used to detect extremely weak light intensities. Si APDs are used in the wavelength range from 250 to 1100 nm, and InGaAs is used as semiconductor material in APDs for the wavelength range from 1100 to 1700 nm.
