Lasers for various medical fields
Whether in ophthalmology, dermatology or pain therapy, each of these applications requires different wavelengths and power levels. For example, defective vision is treated with UV excimer lasers, while low-energy lasers with power levels in the milliwatt range are used for external dermatological treatments; kidney stones can be destroyed with high-power holmium lasers.

Laser surgery
Laser surgery is highly precise and very gentle on tissue. It uses high-energy light to alter tissue. Depending on the effect, a distinction is made between three procedures:
- In laser coagulation, tissue is heated in a targeted manner to stop bleeding or to obliterate diseased tissue. This procedure is used in ophthalmology and tumor therapy, for example.
- Laser ablation is used in tattoo removal or tumor surgery, for example, to precisely remove diseased or unwanted tissue. The tissue is vaporized in the process.
- The laser scalpel enables precise incisions with minimal bleeding. It is used wherever particularly precise incisions are required, for example in plastic surgery or neurosurgery.
Depending on the penetration depth, absorption in the tissue, and thermal effects, different wavelengths and laser types are used, such as argon, CO2, and Er:YAG lasers. Depending on the laser type, different coatings are used for the appropriate laser optics.

Dermatology
Dermatologists in particular often resort to minimally invasive or gentle forms of external laser therapy. For example, they use CO2 and Er:YAG lasers to precisely remove scars and warts from the skin.
Diode and alexandrite lasers are used to heat melanin in the hair follicles for hair removal, while Nd:YAG and KTP lasers are used to treat vascular changes such as spider veins.
Picosecond lasers help to remove tattoos by destroying the pigments in the cells.

Products
Beyond Borders
Two main product groups from LASER COMPONENTS are used in laser therapy: The special Gaussian mirrors calculated and coated by us are used in the laser beam sources. Our coated laser mirrors then guide the beam from the laser beam source to the patient with minimal losses and without negatively influencing the beam.
The lenses coated by us shape and focus the beam – in a quality that is necessary for use on the patient. Upon request, we can coat these optics so that they can be used precisely for several wavelengths at the same time. We also manufacture diagnostic mirrors, which play a key role in stable and repeatable treatment.
Another focus includes our fiber optic assemblies, which are assembled under clean room conditions in an ISO 13485-certified department. According to your specifications, they ensure optimum energy transmission to guarantee targeted patient treatment. Upon request, we can equip the fiber ends with spherical lenses to shape the beam and further reduce the risk of injury during micro-invasive procedures.
