Lt. Governor Polito announced that the Massachusetts Manufacturing Innovation Initiative (M2I2) has awarded a $2,345,000 prize to our partner Sheaumann Laser, a 30-person company based in Marlborough that specializes in the design and manufacture of semiconductor lasers and modules for industrial, military, medical, and graphics applications.
"While other semiconductor laser foundries have relocated overseas to reduce production costs and maintain a competitive edge in the marketplace. This was never an option for Sheaumann Laser. We pride ourselves on providing our customers with high quality laser products that are developed, produced and packaged in the United States," said John Gary Sousa, president of Sheaumann Laser. "The M2I2 capital grant will go a long way in helping us support Sheaumann's passion for innovative technology. We will be able to expand our laser growth capabilities to include InP wavelengths (1120nm - 1875nm) to our current GaAs wavelength catalogue (780 - 1080nm). The M2I2 grant will also allow us to increase the number of jobs in our facility by 35-40%, which will help us meet the requirements of the AIM Photonics initiative*. In addition, the expansion of new technology and personnel will help Sheaumann nearly double its current product line, allowing us to continue to compete with foreign foundries while keeping all of our production operations in Massachusetts."
The American Institute for Manufacturing Integrated Photonics (AIM Photonics) is an industry-driven, public-private partnership that brings the nation's leading expertise and capabilities to bear on a technology that is critical to national security and can provide an attractive return on investment for the US economy. The Institute's goal is to emulate the spectacular successes of the electronics industry over the past 40 years and transfer key lessons, processes and approaches to the integrated photonics industry.
