R&D Department
The R&D teams are responsible for the new and continued development of our products and technologies. Independent of the individual production facilities, this cross-disciplinary team collaborates on a project basis.
Interdisciplinary Team
Beyond Borders
The members of our young and highly motivated team were educated at renowned universities and enjoy many years of scientific and practical experience – in particular in the areas of optical thin-film technology, optoelectronics, and fiber technology. They also keep close contact to the worlds of science and industry.
This scientific and industrial exchange is constantly nurtured and strengthened by participating in relevant conferences, seminars, and trade shows. In addition to the large customer base of LASER COMPONENTS, this exchange forms the basis for the processing of custom OEM projects and the development of new quality products.
Since the requirements for many products and projects span multiple technology areas, interdisciplinary collaboration and constant exchange among experts are crucial when it comes to getting new products ready for series production in the shortest possible time.
In addition, the close proximity to research institutes encourages synergies that are combined in bilateral research projects and research associations. Such projects have always been and still are successful due to the continued development of equipment and measurement technology with partners from science and industry.
Upon customer request, our experts take on complete OEM projects that include the entire product development process:
Fields of Expertise
Beyond Borders
Our interdisciplinary team is comprised of experts from the following fields:
-
Optical thin-film technologies
-
Semiconductor technologies
-
Optoelectronic technologies
-
Fiber-optic transmission technologies
Our inhouse developments and production capabilities cover a wide range of technologies that complement each other:
Laser optics according to customer specifications since 1986
- Dielectric coatings were the first technology at LASER COMPONENTS
- They triggered several other technologies.
Optical fiber assemblies
- The fiber optics manufacturing department profits from our expertise in optical coatings.
- By applying anti-reflection coatings to fiber ends, we optimize the performance and efficiency of our products.
- Fiber assemblies can also be applied to guide light into other LASER COMPNENTS products such as photon counters
Photon counters
- Our photon counters are the result of extensive development work.
- They not only use fiber optic assemblies, but also detector technology and electronics from our own production.
Electronics
- Our self-developed electronics create synergies between many different product lines such as photon counters, pulsed laser diodes and laser modules.
Laser Modules
- Our laser modules use self-developed electronic controls
- Some specialized modules are also equipped with PLDs from LASER COMPONENTS Canada
Tools
Beyond Borders
State-of-the-art software is available to aid in successfully completing OEM projects and developing new products: this includes simulation software for the design of highly complex thin-film layer systems on different substrates, the layout of multi-layered circuit boards, and software for complex construction tasks.
The first prototypes can be quickly and inexpensively produced and sampled in a 3-D printing process. The availability of different programming interfaces is the basis for the advancement of digitalization.
Directors of R&D
Dr. Richard Kim
+ LASER COMPONENTS Detector Group Dr. Richard Kim joined the LASER COMPONENTS Detector Group in 2023 from California, where he was responsible for leading innovations in Silicon UV detectors, Lead Salts, III-V InAsSb, InAs/GaSb T2SL MWIR detectors and MWIR ICLEDs.
Earlier in his career, he focused on path finding research efforts in the areas of photonic integrated waveguide circuits based on Si and III-V materials, LiNbO3 electro-optic modulators/switches, solar cells etc. He holds tens of US/Korean patents and has published over 60 papers in various conferences and journals.
Dr. Sina Malobabic
+ LASER COMPONENTS Germany. After studying physics and mathematics, Sina specialized in optical technologies as a doctoral scholar at the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. and started as a development engineer at LASER COMPONENTS GmbH in 2016.
In 2021, she took over responsibility for technology-oriented tasks, which not only includes the development of coatings and substrate handling, but also the entire measurement technology for optical and optoelectronic components.
Since July 2022, she has also been in charge of product development and manages projects from fiber technology as well as new developments and optimization of optoelectronic components such as laser modules or detectors.
Dr. Saïd Rouifed
+ LASER COMPONENTS Canada Saïd has expertise in III-V and IV semiconductors for optoelectronic and photonic devices, and profits from his significant industrial and academic experience as scientific researcher at University Paris-Saclay (France), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and University of Southampton (UK).
He joined LASER COMPONENTS Canada in March 2020 as a senior optoelectronic scientist, focusing epitaxy and microfabrication methods to enhance laser-based products. In 2022, he led the “chip-group”, managing two doctoral candidates and introducing new technologies for pulsed laser diodes. Since 2023, he has overseen the R&D department, focusing on the design, fabrication, testing, and packaging of laser chips.
